When the now legendary Bergstrom Winery started making Chardonnay, there was no market for it. Everyone expected Oregon Chardonnay to be lean and flavorless because the climate was so cold and there weren’t many winemakers taking it seriously yet, but Josh Bergstrom loved this variety, and the fruit from his vineyards was exceptional, so he set out to challenge this notion. He started making some of the most beautiful expressions of Chardonnay on the market. The grapes, from their oldest vines, are fermented in small French oak barrels and then age for 18 months on the lees before bottling. Elegant, refreshing, balanced, with well-integrated oak so there is no overt “oakiness” or “buttery” quality; truly one of the finest Chardonnays on the market, it will absolutely rival the great wines of Burgundy.
