Zagreus is nestled in the Thracian Valley of Bulgaria between the mountains and the Adriatic sea. Founded in 2003 by 3rd generation winemaker Dimitar Kostadinov who converted the family vines to organic and dry-farming, with low-intervention wine-making practices. The Mavrud (derived from Greek word “mavro”= black), likely because the skins are bluish-black, is an ancient native Bulgarian grape. The wine is fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks because this variety is hearty and structured enough on its own without the need for oak barrel aging. Dark, brooding, absolutely of the earth like roasted beets and fresh soil.
