Brothers Arturo and Kike (hence the name Artuke) have decided to take their family winery, which used to exclusively sell their fruit to a local co-op until the 1990’s, in a more modern direction. The farming is now organic and instead of following the prescribed appellation rules for Rioja, they like they do their own thing, opting to showcase terroir over heavy extraction and new oak. The ‘Pied Rotos’ comes from a high elevation, single vineyard, with a blend of 85% Tempranillo and 15% Graciano which ages for a year in 500L older oak barrels, with 10% going into concrete tanks. This wine certainly has ripeness, but it’s nicely balanced by fresh acidity.
