​Of course the star variety of Piedmont is Nebbiolo- and you may be familiar with Barbera and Dolcetto but examples of Freisa rarely make it to the CT shelves. I love the the medium-bodied food-friendly reds that this lesser-known variety can make. Gianluigi Lano is a small family-run domaine in Barbaresco just outside Alba. They farm organically and make their wines simply and traditionally. This year’s Freisa shows notes of ripe sun-drenched strawberries and herbs with just enough tannin to give it some structure but not so much to dry out the turkey. Try this one with your sausage-filled stuffing roasted mushroom caps or anything covered in gravy.
